Monterey Bay Aquarium Center for Ocean Education & Leadership

EMC Planning Group provided technical analysis and permit entitlement support to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the development of their new $30 million education center at 625 Cannery Row. The Center for Ocean Education & Leadership is designed to house the aquarium’s existing educational department and provide greater opportunities to visiting students. The 26,000-square-foot facility will be four stories high with an event center located on the fourth floor, incorporate technological features for learning and teaching, and will be constructed to U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold standards. The design is aimed to be respectful of the Cannery Row fishing heritage while providing a forward-looking modern twist. EMC Planning Group provided sea level rise, air quality, greenhouse gas, visual, historic and biological analyses. The firm also assisted with plan consistency review and analysis, including findings and evidence, to be included in the application package. This included consistency with the city’s General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Local Coastal Plan Land Use Plan, and the California Coastal Act.
